Heels Recommendations For Students
So you’re ready to step into heels class—literally—and you’re wondering: what kind of shoes do I actually need for this?
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to level up your footwear, here’s a quick guide to finding a pair that feels good, supports you, and helps you move with confidence.
Plus, I’ve linked some Amazon recs below that I’ve either worn myself or recommend to students, depending on your level and needs. You can order these specifically, or use them as a guide when you look for shoes. (I’ve even gotten heels from Rack Room before!)
Beginners:
When you're first getting into heels, your main priorities are structure and comfort. Look for something that’s easy to move in while giving your ankles the support they need. Here’s what to look for:
Shorter, chunkier heel → More heel surface can help with the transition to dancing in a different taller shoe instead of flats.
2–3 inch heel height is perfect → Shorter / kitten heels can work, too.
Ankle support is a must → Make sure to get a pair that zips up or buckles at the ankle.
Avoid pumps → No straps = no support. We want structure, not struggle.
Toe shape matters → Rounded toes or peep hole toe styles are gentler on your feet. Pointed toes can make it harder to articulate movement, and can be difficult to work with as a beginner.
Most importantly: Choose a pair that makes you feel amazing. That boost of confidence will definitely help you in class.
My beginner-friendly Amazon picks:
Intermediate to Advanced:
If you’re more experienced in heels or feeling ready to challenge yourself, here are a few next-level options.
For intermediate/advanced dancers, a 2–3 inch flared heel is great for maintaining support while introducing a sleeker silhouette:
For advanced dancers comfortable in heels, a 3-inch+ stiletto can work beautifully.
Final Thoughts
The right pair of heels doesn’t just support your body—it supports your confidence, too. Choose something that lets you move well and feel good, and don’t be afraid to take your time finding the fit that works for you. You can always upgrade later as you grow.
